Kimi Antonelli's greatest strength may actually be his lack of experience with previous generations of Formula 1 cars.
The way the 19-year-old attacked Monaco's streets — throwing the Mercedes into corners, sliding all four wheels, and balancing the car on a knife's edge just millimetres from the barriers — suggested a driver operating beyond limits that more experienced rivals may subconsciously respect.
The contrast with George Russell is striking. Russell recently admitted that the current Mercedes does not suit his natural driving style and that he may need to rethink key aspects of his approach. Antonelli, meanwhile, appears completely at one with the car.
As Martin Brundle has often observed: "The older drivers have more things to forget about Formula 1 than the young drivers have to learn."
There is little doubt Russell will bounce back, but after just six race weekends he already trails his teenage teammate by 68 points.
At only 19 years of age, Antonelli has emerged as a genuine championship contender — and a realistic candidate to become the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history.
LeClerc’s home misery
One of the biggest differences between elite drivers is found under braking. At the absolute limit, when a driver is chasing the final few hundredths of a second, even the smallest variation in brake feel and feedback can have a major impact on performance.
That was one of Lewis Hamilton's biggest frustrations last season. The seven-time World Champion repeatedly complained about brake feel and eventually persuaded Ferrari to switch from Brembo to Carbon Industrie brake discs while retaining the rest of the Brembo system. Hamilton has raced with this configuration since the Japanese Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, appeared to be fighting a different battle in Monaco. Repeated front lock-ups suggested a lack of confidence under braking, forcing the Monegasque to operate on a knife's edge around a circuit where precision matters more than anywhere else on the calendar.
Watching Leclerc wrestle with the car, it often felt as though a major mistake was only a matter of time — and it eventually arrived during the restart. With Monaco exposing his braking struggles so clearly, there is growing speculation that Ferrari could follow Hamilton's lead and equip Leclerc's car with Carbon Industrie discs while retaining the rest of the Brembo braking system.
Were Alpine and Gasly Robbed of a Monaco Podium?
A total of six drivers were penalised for exceeding the Monaco pit lane speed limit by as little as 0.01 km/h, but no penalty had a bigger impact than the one handed to Pierre Gasly.
The Alpine driver crossed the finish line in third place but was later demoted to seventh. After reviewing all available telemetry data, Alpine insist that Gasly never exceeded the 60 km/h pit lane speed limit and have lodged an official protest.
If the team's data is correct, one possible explanation is that drivers effectively shortened the distance through the pit lane by cutting the entry or exit lines, resulting in a higher average speed despite remaining below the limit at individual measurement points.
A change to the Monaco Grand Prix result remains highly unlikely given the sporting and legal implications. However, Alpine's protest could provide important answers to the many questions surrounding the unprecedented wave of pit lane speed penalties seen during the weekend.
