How could Aston Martin get it so wrong?
On paper Aston Martin appears to have everything needed to dominate Formula 1: the sport's most successful designer in Adrian Newey, a world-class driver in two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso, one of the world's most advanced Formula 1 factories and wind tunnels, strong financial backing, and global partners.
So, how could things have gone so wrong?
According to Newey, the problems began long before the first race of 2026. Persistent power unit integration issues with Honda meant the team didn't complete its first proper running until FP3 at the Australian Grand Prix, leaving Aston Martin almost completely unprepared for the season opener.
He also revealed that parts of the team's engineering and project management systems still dated back to the Jordan F1 era, creating major inefficiencies during the AMR26 build. Combined with a late switch to the 2026 regulations, Aston Martin was forced to develop an overweight car around an ambitious aerodynamic concept without enough time to fully optimise it.
Rather than introducing small upgrades throughout the season, the team has focused its resources on one major upgrade package for the Hungarian Grand Prix, featuring significant weight reduction and revised aerodynamics.
This weekend's British Grand Prix will expose just how big Aston Martin's challenge really is. The question isn't just whether Hungary's upgrades can salvage 2026—but whether this project can avoid becoming F1's latest cautionary tale.
Money? ✅ Check. World-class facilities? ✅ Check. The greatest engineering mind in the sport? ✅ Check.
None of it guarantees success. Toyota proved that the hard way, spending one of Formula 1's biggest budgets without ever winning a race.
Now Aston Martin must prove their story ends differently.
