Why are some F1 circuits energy-rich?

One of the biggest challenges under the 2026 regulations isn't fuel or tyres—it's electricity.

The new power units rely heavily on the MGU-K to recover energy under braking, but the battery is relatively small to keep the car's weight under control. That means teams must constantly balance how much energy they recover against how much they spend.

At an energy-rich circuit, drivers brake hard and often, giving the MGU-K plenty of opportunities to recharge the battery. Shanghai, Miami, Montréal, Barcelona, Monaco and the Hungaroring all fall into this category.

An energy-poor circuit is the opposite. Tracks such as Suzuka, Silverstone, Spa and Monza feature long periods at full throttle, fast corners and relatively little heavy braking. The battery simply cannot recover enough energy to support maximum electrical deployment for the entire lap.

When that happens, teams must either accept reduced electrical power or use the engine to recharge the battery. That means sacrificing propulsion to generate electricity instead, turning an F1 engine into the world's most expensive electricity generator.

Why Antonelli survived Mercedes' software bug, but Russell didn't

Mercedes has now revealed that a software bug was behind the deployment problems that affected both of its cars at the Belgian Grand Prix. Yet only George Russell paid the full price. Why?

A coding error prevented the launch mode from cancelling after the start, meaning neither battery recharged properly under braking for La Source. Both Russell and Kimi Antonelli immediately lost around 30-40% of their available electrical energy.

On paper, both drivers should have been affected equally. Instead, Antonelli caught a lucky break.

As Max Verstappen attacked on the run to Eau Rouge, Antonelli briefly lifted off the throttle to avoid contact. That unexpected lift effectively reset the system, allowing it to deploy electrical energy much closer to normal for the rest of the Kemmel Straight.

Russell never got that opportunity. His car remained stuck with the original deployment restriction, leaving him defenceless as both Ferraris swept past. Moments later, contact with Lewis Hamilton ended his race before the opening lap was complete.

Mercedes also revealed that Russell's qualifying deployment problems were caused by a different software bug. This time, the system over-deployed electrical energy early in the lap, leaving him short of power through the final sector.

In the end, the difference between Russell and Antonelli wasn't the software. Both cars suffered the same fault. It was a split-second lift behind Verstappen that changed everything.
