Why pole may not matter

Ferrari have looked exceptionally strong all weekend, with the Hungaroring playing to their biggest strengths: mechanical balance, traction and an efficient power unit. They dominated the whole weekend, only for Lando Norris to snatch pole by just 0.012 seconds after a 77-second lap.
McLaren arrived with a revised floor, the latest Mercedes power unit and batteries introduced in Belgium and, as discussed previously, shorter gear ratios. Over a single lap, the two teams now appear almost evenly matched.
The picture changes over a race distance. Friday's long-run data tells a very different story:

Qualifying suggested a straight fight between Ferrari and McLaren, but Sunday's race looks far more open. Based on Friday's long-run pace, all four top teams have a realistic chance of victory.
Track position could prove decisive. The quickest cars over a single lap do not appear to have the strongest race pace, yet overtaking at the Hungaroring is notoriously difficult.

How fast was Norris's pole, really?

Lando Norris secured pole position with a lap of 1:17.207, but where would that time place him against every other pole lap on the current Hungaroring layout?

The 2026 cars are significantly slower than their predecessors because the new regulations prioritise energy efficiency over outright power. Even so, Norris's pole lap is already quicker than the 2022 pole time and more than 1.5 seconds faster than the benchmark set in 2010.

Why the best engine isn't enough

Two spins in qualifying showed just how difficult the RB22 is to set up and control. The drivers have complained about everything from inconsistent aerodynamic balance to gearbox behaviour, but the onboard footage reveals another, less obvious limitation.
As discussed previously, the Hungaroring is an energy-rich circuit. The heavy braking zones normally generate enough electrical energy, eliminating the need for additional battery-charging techniques such as super clipping or Lift and Coast. Yet the Red Bull drivers are still forced to lift before braking for Turn 1. None of their main rivals appear to be doing the same.
That suggests Red Bull are harvesting less electrical energy than Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes, forcing the drivers to sacrifice lap time simply to recharge the battery.
Ironically, Red Bull are widely believed to have the strongest internal combustion engine on the grid. Their weakness appears to lie not in the petrol engine, but in the electrical side of the power unit—a handicap that becomes increasingly costly under the 2026 regulations.
