What separates the two championship rivals?
After the first nine race weekends, Kimi Antonelli has looked like the quicker Mercedes driver. But raw pace alone will not decide this championship. George Russell has repeatedly shown that he can adapt, recover and consistently score points, making this battle far from over.
So where is the difference?
Antonelli's biggest strength is his ability to find the limit of grip almost immediately. Whether on low-speed street circuits or high-speed tracks, he appears naturally comfortable extracting the maximum from the car. Russell usually needs more time to reach the same level of confidence and is not consistently as close to the limit.
That advantage is particularly visible in qualifying. Antonelli often delivers his fastest lap on the very first push lap of a new tire set, regardless of the compound. Russell typically requires more attempts before extracting the maximum performance.
The difference also carries into race trim. Antonelli's shorter and direct racing lines allow him to experiment with different energy deployment strategies, giving Mercedes engineers greater strategic flexibility. Russell has access to the same car and power unit, but matching that approach would require significant changes to a driving style refined over many years.
Russell remains one of Formula 1's most analytical drivers and should not be underestimated. But unless he unlocks another step in performance, Antonelli's natural speed may prove decisive. At this stage of the season, the battle between the two Mercedes teammates looks increasingly like the fight that could decide the 2026 World Championship.

Brembo vs Carbon Industrie – why Ferrari changed brake supplier
Since the introduction of the current Formula 1 regulations, engineers have been talking less about tyres and far more about brakes. Why?
The answer lies in the hybrid power unit.
Modern F1 cars recover huge amounts of energy under braking through the MGU-K. As a result, the rear brakes are no longer controlled directly by the driver's foot. Instead, a sophisticated brake-by-wire system constantly balances hydraulic braking with electrical energy recovery to maximise both braking performance and battery charging.
Most Formula 1 teams use braking systems supplied by Brembo, while some combine Brembo components with carbon brake discs produced by Carbon Industrie, the French company owned by the Safran Group and best known for supplying carbon brakes to the aviation industry.
Although the overall performance of the two manufacturers is very similar, their characteristics are quite different.
Brembo brakes are generally less sensitive to operating temperature, making them easier to manage across changing conditions. However, drivers have occasionally reported small variations between different sets, which can affect confidence.
Carbon Industrie discs behave differently. They require higher operating temperatures to deliver maximum braking performance, but once in their ideal window they are renowned for exceptional consistency—not only between different sets, but throughout the entire life of the discs.
That consistency is likely one of the main reasons Ferrari recently switched to Carbon Industrie. For Formula 1 drivers, knowing the brakes will respond identically every time can be worth far more than a small peak performance advantage. Confidence under braking often translates directly into lap time.
