Was Norris always going to win?

Did Oscar Piastri really have the pace to win the Hungarian Grand Prix? It's difficult to say. Although Piastri controlled the race from the front, the data confirms Lando Norris was the quicker McLaren driver. After Piastri made his first pit stop, Norris immediately began lapping around one second per lap faster, despite running on significantly older tyres.
Even without the contact with Carlos Sainz, it would have been difficult for Piastri to retain the lead after his pit stop. Had he managed to do so, it would have been fascinating to see whether McLaren would once again have enforced their infamous Papaya Rules—but we'll never know.
The data also suggests that Piastri was working his rear tyres much harder than Norris, explaining why his opening stint was considerably shorter. Despite the blue flag confusion and the late-race drama, Norris delivered a remarkably complete race. Charles Leclerc set the fastest lap, but Norris was rarely forced to push at his absolute limit after Piastri retired and the fuel load came down.
McLaren's upgrades are clearly working. Norris showed the pace in Belgium, but an engine-change penalty prevented him from fighting for victory. Hungary confirmed the picture. On two very different circuits, McLaren have looked like the team to beat.

How Piastri won the start?

Oscar Piastri's excellent launch was the key to taking the lead. The data shows it came from two factors: a quicker reaction time and better initial traction.
First, the reaction times:

The data shows that Piastri gained almost all of his advantage during the initial acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. His superb reaction time and superior traction gave him an early lead of around 0.1 seconds over Norris and 0.2 seconds over Verstappen who was on the dirty side of the grid. From 100 to 200 km/h, all three drivers accelerated at virtually the same rate, confirming that the decisive moment came immediately after the lights went out.
It is also worth noting that all three drivers started on the medium compound, while Ferrari chose soft and failed to deliver the expected launch advantage.

🟦 Blue flags weren't the problem

The Hungarian Grand Prix highlighted an increasingly obvious trend in Formula 1: teams rely so heavily on technology that simple common sense is sometimes forgotten.
Oscar Piastri, who was fighting for victory, was hit by Carlos Sainz while lapping him. At first, it appeared that Race Control had failed to display blue flags. In reality, the opposite was true—they were shown almost everywhere. The marshals were waving blue flags, the electronic light panels were active, blue cockpit warning lights were flashing, every driver had a race engineer backed by dozens of engineers on the pit wall and, last but not least, every driver had rear-view mirrors! Yet somehow, nobody managed to prevent an incident that should have been obvious. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff summed it up after the race:
"The problem is that some engineers on the pit wall are absolute Teletubbies and would rather stare up at the sky than tell their drivers that there's a train of leading drivers coming from behind and that they're fighting for positions."
Oscar Piastri was equally unimpressed by Sainz's move:
"That's got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen on a race track, so I don't really care what excuse he gave."
The confusion became even clearer in the cooldown room:
Antonelli: "I was getting blue flags. I was on the radio asking, 'What am I getting blue flags for?'"
Norris: "I think they gave them to everyone. Even I got a blue flag at one point."
Formula 1 is built on technology. But technology should support common sense, not replace it.
