Leclerc: Why driving below the limit is faster
Charles Leclerc believes modern Formula 1 rewards energy management more than aggression.
"Every time you exceed the limit, every time you have wheel slip, you waste energy because you're not moving forward but you're draining the battery."
In previous years, a small slide mainly cost lap time. Today, it also drains electrical energy, leaving less power available for the rest of the lap.
"Now it's a bit more of a strategy game and keeping calm to reach the absolute limit."
The quickest lap is no longer always the most aggressive one. Keeping the tyres below the point of excessive slip can be faster over an entire lap.
Leclerc also explained why adapting to these cars has become so difficult.
"If you change your driving style but the programming goes in the opposite direction, you end up much worse than before."
Driving style is now closely tied to software, power unit mapping and energy deployment. A setup that suits one circuit can easily become a weakness at the next.
"Pushing to the absolute limit is probably less rewarding than it was in the past... It's a bit more of a strategy game and keeping calm to reach the absolute limit."

Can Aston Martin save their season?
Aston Martin need a major step forward with their first significant upgrade package. Their season has gone from bad to worse, with the gap to the front increasing by around 0.25% at every race so far. If that trend continues, they risk falling outside the 107% qualifying rule, which would prevent them from starting the race because they would simply be too slow compared with the rest of the field.
The last team to fail the 107% rule was HRT at the 2012 Australian Grand Prix.
According to Adrian Newey, this is an evolution rather than a revolution. The upgrade includes a revised front wing, nose, rear suspension and aerodynamic package, but it is not a complete B-spec car. The aggressive rake philosophy, now unique on the grid, remains unchanged, confirming that Aston Martin have chosen to develop their existing concept rather than abandon it. The first signs from Friday's limited running at the Hungaroring are encouraging, but the real test still lies ahead. This weekend is expected to be pivotal in determining whether Aston Martin have finally found a development direction that can carry them into 2027.

Are Mercedes in trouble at the Hungaroring?
Not yet—but there are reasons for concern. Kimi Antonelli missed FP1, and it was clear from the start of FP2 that the balance of his car was far from neutral.
The headline lap times tell only part of the story. Mercedes appear to be running a more conservative engine mode than Ferrari, but their cornering performance is the bigger concern.
Lewis Hamilton was consistently quicker through almost every corner, with particularly large gains in Turns 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. That points to a chassis deficit rather than a power unit issue.
Mercedes recover some of the lost time in the final sector through higher top speed and a different energy deployment strategy. By qualifying, they are likely to increase the engine mode and improve the car's balance, making the overall picture much closer.
The bigger question is whether those gains will also translate to long-run pace. We'll have a much clearer answer after Saturday's running.
