Onboard footage reveals two distinct approaches through Copse. Hamilton and Max Verstappen stay in eighth gear, allowing the battery to deplete until superclipping slows the car —even with the throttle fully open.

Kimi Antonelli takes the opposite approach. He briefly shifts down to seventh gear, increasing engine revs to recharge the battery. He sacrifices a small amount of corner speed but carries more electrical energy onto the following straight.

The trade-off is simple: Ferrari prioritised corner speed, while Mercedes prioritised battery charge.

The data suggests Mercedes still had the quicker overall package. Ideal lap analysis indicates Antonelli had enough pace for Sprint pole, but Hamilton extracted almost every thousandth available from the Ferrari.

Silverstone has provided the clearest picture yet of how the 2026 regulations are affecting performance. With its combination of long straights and high-speed corners, it was expected to expose the limitations of the new power units.

The table below compares Lewis Hamilton's fastest Sprint Qualifying lap with Max Verstappen's pole lap from the 2025 British Grand Prix. For context, we've also included the gap from the opening race of the season in Australia.

The result is striking. Despite Silverstone placing far greater demands on the power unit than Australia, the performance deficit is almost identical—just 0.062 seconds larger.

That suggests teams are already finding ways to manage the new regulations more effectively than many expected, even at one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar.
