🏎️ Has Mercedes found another loophole?

Mercedes' telemetry from Sprint Qualifying at Silverstone contains a surprising detail. After exiting the final corner Kimi Antonelli briefly lifted off the throttle—even though he was still on his fastest qualifying lap.

Why would a driver voluntarily slow down at the most important moment?

It has almost nothing to do with driving—and everything to do with software. The answer lies in one of the least understood aspects of the 2026 regulations: MGU-K ramp-down.

When the battery is close to empty, the FIA does not allow the electrical power to disappear instantly. Losing around 500 bhp in a fraction of a second could create a dangerous closing-speed difference between two cars. Instead, the regulations require the electrical power to be reduced gradually. At Silverstone, that reduction is limited to 50 kW per second.

Earlier this season, teams discovered a loophole. By deliberately interrupting the MGU-K, they could restart it without the normal ramp-down limits. The FIA closed that loophole after Suzuka. Telemetry now suggests another workaround may have emerged. By briefly lifting off the throttle in a high-speed section—something the power unit software would not normally expect—the system appears to enter a different operating mode, effectively bypassing the normal ramp-down sequence. A similar pattern was visible during Charles Leclerc's qualifying lap in China after he was forced to lift through Turns 7 and 8.

The gain may be only one tenth of a second, but in Formula 1 that can decide pole position. More importantly, the same technique could become a valuable weapon during wheel-to-wheel battles, where access to full electrical power at the right moment can determine the outcome of an overtake or defence.

It is obvious that Mercedes have found another way to extract performance from the 2026 regulations before its rivals which means that the engineering and political battle for supremacy in F1 has just escalated dramatically …

The Sprint suggested that Mercedes' long-run pace may be even stronger than expected.

Lewis Hamilton used all his experience to keep Kimi Antonelli behind during the opening laps, but once Antonelli finally found clean air, he quickly pulled away and controlled the race with impressive confidence.

That should concern Ferrari ahead of today's Grand Prix. Over a full race distance, Mercedes appears to have the stronger package, even if Hamilton extracted more from the Ferrari over a single qualifying lap.

Starting from fourth, George Russell also has every opportunity to join the fight at the front. If Mercedes' race pace is as strong as it looked in the Sprint, the battle between Russell and Antonelli could become one of the defining stories of the British Grand Prix.

Since the start of the season, McLaren have repeatedly hinted that they are not receiving all the information needed to extract the maximum performance from the Mercedes power unit. The implication is that the factory team knows something its customers do not.

Reality is probably more complicated.

Every Formula 1 power unit is supplied under tightly regulated FIA homologation rules. The hardware, software and technical documentation are strictly controlled, making it extremely difficult for a manufacturer to favour its own team by withholding approved information.

The real difference is more likely to come from interpretation rather than information. Mercedes and McLaren are independent engineering organisations. They receive the same power unit, but how they integrate it into the chassis, manage battery deployment and optimise the control software is entirely their own responsibility.

That may be the best way to understand modern Formula 1 supplier-customer relationships. The hardware may be identical. The performance rarely is. That's where Formula 1 engineers make the difference.
